Serena Williams Wrote an Open Letter Encouraging Female Athletes to "Push for Greatness"
DEC 1, 2016
Serena Williams is considered by many to be one of the greatest female athletes in the world, but there's just one problem with that honor. Not only is she one of the greatest female athletes, she's one of the greatest athletes, period.
Serena penned a letter in Porter magazine's "Incredible Women of 2016" issue. In it, she states her hopes for female athletes and encourages women to take control of their future.
When comparing her own reviews to those of her male counterparts, she states, "Do they say LeBron is one of the world's best male athletes? Is Tiger? Federer? Why not?" She encourages women to strive for greatness when facing adversity, "What others marked as flaws or disadvantages about myself - my race, my gender - I embraced as fuel for my success. I never let anything or anyone define me or my potential. I controlled my future."
"We must continue to dream big, and in doing so, we empower the next generation of women to be just as bold in their pursuits."
